Samman Association, recently hosted a unique and heartwarming online art support group. Led by Pallavi Saxena, an accomplished artist and epilepsy warrior, the session showcased how creativity can be a powerful tool for healing, self-expression, and mental well-being.

Art as a creative medium for People with Epilepsy

Art therapy has gained recognition worldwide as a tool to support emotional and mental health, and in India, it is becoming an empowering medium for the epilepsy community. Pallavi opened the session by sharing her personal journey with epilepsy.

She explained how art can help reduce anxiety, improve focus, and enhance brain activity, making it an invaluable support for epilepsy management. Her story was an inspiation for our members, proving that creativity can transform even the toughest challenges into opportunities for growth.

Mindful Drawing for Relaxation and Expression

One of the highlights of the workshop was learning creative and mindful drawing techniques — a style of free-form drawing that uses flowing lines, curves, and patterns to relax the mind and encourage self-expression. Pallavi guided the group through simple exercises.

Hands-On Art Exercises

Participants worked on black-and-white sketches of leaves and circles, experimenting with repetitive patterns, shading, and unique designs. These structured yet calming exercises provided a meditative experience, helping participants feel more present and focused.

The session also introduced the “Tree of Hopefulness” activity, encouraging everyone to reflect on their dreams and ambitions while adding details to their artwork.

Her advice was simple yet impactful:

  • Find a supportive friend or colleague
  • Accept weaknesses and turn them into opportunities
  • Celebrate even the smallest personal achievements

Why Art Matters for Epilepsy in India

For many people with epilepsy in Mumbai and across India, art offers:

  • Stress relief during seizure recovery or medical treatment
  • A non-verbal outlet to process emotions
  • Improved focus and hand-eye coordination
  • A safe space to connect with others who understand their journey

Workshops like these remind us that epilepsy is not the end of creativity. In fact, it can be the very reason to discover new talents and passions.

Samman Association, the Mumbai Chapter of Indian Epilepsy Association, is dedicated to empowering people with epilepsy and their caregivers.
