On National Epilepsy Day, Samman Association marked the occasion with an insightful Facebook Live session dedicated to awareness, education, and support for individuals living with epilepsy and their families. The conversation brought together two voices from different but deeply connected perspectives: Dr. Jayanti Mani, Neurologist,Epileptologist and Secretary of Samman, and Ms. Neeta Sodhi Patil, clinical psychologist and a person living with epilepsy.

The goal of the session was to simplify what epilepsy really is, address common fears, and highlight the importance of support systems in managing the condition.

Courage, Acceptance & Growth

One of the most powerful parts of the session was when Ms. Neeta Sodhi Patil shared her personal journey. Diagnosed at 17, she navigated confusion, stigma, and fear—feelings many newly diagnosed individuals experience.

What helped her most was support from her family, consistent medical care, and eventually, understanding the condition and accepting it rather than fearing it. Her story reinforced a message many needed to hear: Education reduces fear. Awareness replaces stigma.

Her lived experience also shaped her professional path, inspiring her to pursue psychology and later research how epilepsy affects personality, self-esteem, and emotional wellbeing.

Medication, Myths & Modern Treatment

Many patients worry about anti-seizure medications—particularly side effects and long-term use. Dr. Mani addressed this concern thoughtfully, explaining that while older medicines often had more side effects, newer treatments are safer, more effective, and well studied, even during pregnancy when prescribed appropriately.

Both speakers emphasized something simple yet crucial:

📌 Never stop medication abruptly

Emotional Health, Therapy & Community Support

Epilepsy can affect confidence, independence, relationships, and identity. Anxiety around “when the next seizure might come” is common.

Here, counselling, therapy, and peer support become essential—not optional.
Ms. Patil spoke about the role of Samman’s support group, now active for over 30 years, in creating a non-judgmental space where people can learn, share, and connect.

For many, belonging to a community transforms isolation into strength.

First Aid: What Everyone Should Know

A practical takeaway from the session was a clear, simple explanation of seizure first aid. One message was emphasized strongly:

Do NOT put anything in the person’s mouth.

Instead, the right steps are:

  • Stay calm
  • Ensure safety
  • Turn the person gently to one side
  • Time the seizure
  • Seek medical care if it lasts beyond 5 minutes

Samman continues to distribute pictorial guides to spread these essential steps.
