Samman’s September support group meeting included a presentation and discussion on ‘Sleep Hygiene’ by Dr. Joy Desai, an expert neurologist and Vice-President of Samman Association. The presentation was aimed to improve the understanding of sleep, sleep patterns, and the effects of sleep deprivation.
Dr. Desai’s presentation disseminated information on the stages of sleep, the wakefulness pathway, the various functions of sleep, the severe effects of sleep deprivation. We concluded with a discussion on tips to maintain healthy sleep/wake cycle and some effective sleep hygiene practices.
Dr. Desai asserts that sleep is nature’s power-pill. It improves memory, strengthens emotional equilibrium, powers the immune system, cleans the brain of biological waste, among other things. “Your brain starts to eat itself when it doesn’t get enough sleep,” says Dr. Desai.
